Discover Shaftesbury: History, Trails and Special Experiences
Accommodation in Shaftesbury
Shaftesbury is a destination for anyone looking to combine historic sites, distinctive trails and vibrant culture. Gold Hill is particularly impressive: the steep street lined with closely packed cottages was featured in a Hovis bread commercial directed by Ridley Scott in 1973. Visitors can walk up Gold Hill and enjoy views across the Blackmore Vale from the café at the top. An easier route to the top leads through a passage beside the Town Hall on the High Street.
History and distinctive places
Near Gold Hill lie the ruins of Shaftesbury Abbey in a peaceful, walled garden. From there, there are views across the Blackmore Vale. Shaftesbury Abbey was founded around AD 888 by King Alfred as the first religious house intended exclusively for women. The associated museum displays Anglo-Saxon carvings and medieval floor tiles discovered during archaeological excavations.
The Gold Hill Museum also brings the town’s history to life. Its collection includes the town’s first fire engine, a hand-drawn pump. Admission to the museum is free. The building itself was formerly a lodging house for cattle drovers, entertainers and traders who came to Shaftesbury’s markets and fairs. The museum therefore brings together everyday history and the development of the town.
On Castle Hill stands a medieval fortified house, designated as a Scheduled Monument, on a small, steep promontory. It is thought to have been built during the First English Civil War between King Stephen and Empress Matilda, from 1135 to 1154. Castle Hill is also an important wildlife area within convenient walking distance of Shaftesbury town centre.
Countryside and trails around Shaftesbury
The Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty surrounds Shaftesbury to the north, east and south. This gives anyone who wants to experience the countryside as well as the historic sites a range of options for planning their day. Park Walk is a traffic-free area with benches; from there, you can see Melbury Beacon in the Cranborne Chase National Landscape.
For longer walks, St Edward’s Way runs for more than 30 miles between Wareham and Shaftesbury Abbey. There are waymarkers along the route and a free interactive map. The White Hart Link is a 50-mile, or 80-kilometre, circular walking route through the five market towns of North Dorset and the villages between them. These two options suit different travel plans: one route leads specifically to Shaftesbury Abbey, while the other explores a wider landscape with several market towns and villages.
Culture, traditions and special experiences
The Shaftesbury Arts Centre was founded in 1957 in the old covered market in the centre of the medieval hilltop town of Shaftesbury. It offers a year-round programme of theatre performances, films, art, photography and craft exhibitions, workshops, and training and education courses. The Shaftesbury Carnival began in 1877 and continues to raise money for local charities every year.
An unusual local tradition is the Gold Hill Cheese Race. Participants have to carry a 23 kg round cheese up the famous cobbled Gold Hill. Shaftesbury Lido also has a distinctive history: it was created from a water tank that formed part of the waterworks completed in 1852, with two deep wells at Barton Hill and a pumping station. Today, it is the only outdoor swimming pool in Dorset and is open to everyone.
