Culture

Exeter Cathedral has stood at the heart of Devon for almost a thousand years. Its continuous medieval stone vault is considered the longest in the world; it extends for 96 m from the west wall of the nave to the east wall above the high altar. Guided tours provide insights into the architecture and hidden areas. The Treasures exhibition presents the Exeter Book and treasures from the former cathedral library. Families can also enjoy a Cathedral Cat Trail and interactive craft activities.

Totnes Castle is a classic Norman motte-and-bailey castle. It was built shortly after the Norman Conquest at the highest point of the hilltop town of Totnes. Okehampton Castle combines an audio guide with the opportunity to explore its ruins. The Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery's collections comprise more than one million individual objects and specimens, organised into eight main categories. Kents Cavern is considered one of Britain's most important Ice Age archaeological sites. Buckfast Abbey is home to a community of Roman Catholic Benedictine monks.

Sea and nature

The National Marine Aquarium is located in Plymouth, Devon, and is the United Kingdom's national aquarium. It consists of four main zones, ranging from the local waters of Plymouth Sound Marine Park to the tropical waters of the Great Barrier Reef. The Atlantic Ocean habitat is the deepest aquarium habitat in the United Kingdom and holds 2.5 million litres of water.

Dartmoor National Park has 450 miles of public rights of way. In addition, there are more than 350 km of bridleways and minor roads, as well as quiet roads and designated cycle routes. RHS Garden Rosemoor is a visitor garden in a Devon valley with formal and informal plantings. It can be reached without a car by bus, train, bicycle or on foot. The Dartington Estate has Grade II listed gardens; its footpaths and walking trails are open from sunrise to sunset. Greenway combines walled gardens, river views and romantic woodland. Another striking landscape feature is the deepest river gorge in south-west England, which has a 30 m-high waterfall.

Coast and paths

The South Devon section of the South West Coast Path passes through the English Riviera. Devon's coast offers opportunities for surf sessions and walks along the South West Coast Path. At Bantham Beach, you can take a surf lesson at local surf schools. When the sea is calm, stand-up paddleboard tours are also possible there along the coast or on the River Avon Creek.

The Tarka Trail is one of Britain's longest continuous traffic-free walking and cycling routes and forms part of the Devon Coast to Coast Cycle Route. Alongside Dartmoor's public rights of way, this provides designated routes for travelling on two wheels.

Regional tradition

Devon's culinary character includes Devon Cream Tea. Traditionally, it is served first with clotted cream and then with jam.
