Selsey is set in an impressive coastal landscape: the town is surrounded by beaches on all sides except the north. This offers you a trip combining the sea, protected natural areas, traces of history and active experiences. When choosing your holiday apartment or holiday house, you can therefore consider whether you are primarily planning beach days, walks, cycling tours, culture or activities on the water.

Beaches and Coastal Nature Around Selsey

East Beach is Selsey's largest beach and stretches towards Pagham Harbour. At the mouth of Pagham Harbour, there is also a protected beach on the northeastern side of Selsey with diverse wildlife. Beyond Oval Field lies Selsey's most secluded sandy beach. Oval Field itself has benches and picnic tables—a specific detail for anyone who wants to combine their time by the sea with a peaceful break.

The natural areas also give the town its own character. RSPB Pagham Harbour has many footpaths through salt marshes, mudflats, grassland, agricultural land, woodland, reed beds, lagoons and shingle beaches. RSPB Medmerry offers long walks and cycling tours through a rugged landscape with panoramic views and sunsets. The area is one of two coastal nature reserves located on either side of Selsey Town.

History, Craft and Maritime Impressions

Selsey can also be discovered through its history. The Heritage Trail connects important historic sites marked by blue plaques. Medmerry Mill, also known as Selsey Windmill, is a restored red-brick windmill from the 19th century. It was operated from 1820 until the 1920s. Selsey Lifeboat Station was founded in 1861. In its visitor centre, you can see the Shannon All Weather Lifeboat up close in the Experience Room.

Another way to experience the local atmosphere is through creative work: Chisel Pottery at Mariner's Yard offers pottery classes and workshops for adults and children. This means a stay in Selsey can be shaped not only by the landscape and sea, but also by crafts and maritime history.

Active Days on the Water and by Bike

Off Selsey, shore diving, snorkelling and freediving are possible close to the beach. Diving depths range from 8 to 40 metres. Anyone interested in the underwater world can take these different options into account when planning their trip. The wreck Far Mulberry, Phoenix Caison, is classified as a Scheduled Wreck and can be reached with a 15-minute RIB trip from the shore at Selsey.

For cycling tours, the Selsey Cycle Network describes circular routes across the Manhood Peninsula. In addition, the paths at RSPB Medmerry offer another way to explore the landscape by bike. Selsey is also known for its dark night skies, which are associated with the astronomer Sir Patrick Moore, who lived there. The range of experiences therefore extends from a daytime cycling trip to observing the night sky.

The Right Accommodation for Your Stay

A holiday apartment in Selsey is particularly suited to your plans if you want to organise your days flexibly between the beach, nature, history and water activities. Before you begin your search, decide which experiences should take up the most space: the beaches, the network of paths in the nature reserves, the Heritage Trail, pottery classes or activities on the water will lead to different travel plans. A holiday house may also make sense if you are spending more time in the area and want to combine several of these priorities. The decisive factor is the location you prefer for your planned days—perhaps with a view of the coast as a point of reference or with a focus on excursions into nature.

For comparison with other places, you can also look at Pagham, Wisborough Green, Amberley, Rusper, Madehurst, Ferring, Barnham and Burgess Hill.
