Holiday apartment in Renfrewshire: culture, nature and history

Paisley Abbey was founded in 1163 as a Cluniac monastery on land in Renfrewshire. In 1245, the priory at Paisley was elevated to abbey status. Coats Observatory adds a special focal point: it is Scotland’s oldest surviving public observatory. Culture

In Kilbarchan, Weaver's Cottage reconstructs the living and working conditions of a typical handloom weaver. The building also houses the town’s last functioning handloom. Access is difficult because of two steps, uneven floors, a winding staircase and low ceilings. In Paisley, the Sma' Shot Cottages illustrate a typical 18th-century weaver’s home; local tours provide an insight into the life and work of a weaver’s family.

Renfrew itself also preserves a range of historical perspectives. Renfrew Museum presents Renfrew’s history from the Middle Ages to the present day in an interactive exhibition on the themes of earth, fire, air and water. The museum is accessible to wheelchair users and people with reduced mobility. Robertson Park contains a duck pond, flower gardens, a BMX facility and a skate park. Bascule Bridge is considered to be Scotland’s only folding bascule bridge.

In Elderslie, the Wallace Birthplace Monument stands at the traditional site of William Wallace’s house. Carved panels depict important moments from William Wallace’s life. Johnstone History Museum preserves archive material from the companies Wm. Paton Ltd and Clifton and Baird, as well as further materials relating to the history of Johnstone. The Celtic & Templar Stones are believed to mark the final resting place of prominent figures from the vanished Kingdom of Strathclyde; these figures date from around AD 900 to 1100. The Heritage Centre provides access to significant archives on the history of Renfrewshire, its people and its places.

Nature

Castle Semple Country Park in Lochwinnoch offers accessible waters for outdoor activities. The park lies on the car-free Sustrans National Cycle Route 7 between Glasgow and Irvine. The RSPB Lochwinnoch nature reserve contains a wetland where whooper swans, wigeon, goldeneye and other ducks can be seen in winter. The area includes wildlife trails, hides and viewpoints. It also has three level paths, including a 1.5-kilometre fully accessible main path.

Paths and connections

Lochwinnoch railway station is 400 metres south-east of the visitor centre at the RSPB nature reserve. The cycling and walking route between Paisley and Renfrew takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes at a leisurely pace. It is step-free and has only slight inclines. The Paisley South route runs along the Gleniffer Braes nature trail and through the Durrockstock local nature reserve. From Paisley Gilmour Street station, services run to Glasgow Central station, with a journey time of less than 15 minutes.

Experiences

In Paisley, the Discover Paisley Walking Trail connects venues in the town centre, each 10 to 15 minutes’ walk from the next. Paisley Tours includes a historic town tour, a treasure hunt for children and a self-guided tour of historic pubs. Barshaw Park has a pond, walled gardens, children’s play areas, a BMX facility and a seasonal miniature railway.

Regional history is also made accessible through a range of formats. The Paisley Food and Drink Festival featured street food from different parts of Scotland, local traders and live music. Alongside archives, museums and historic buildings, public events and culinary impressions from different parts of Scotland therefore also form part of Paisley’s townscape.
