Drumnadrochit lies on the shore of Loch Ness, 19 miles from Inverness towards Fort Augustus. History, Nessie stories and activities on and around the loch give the village its different sides. There is also a long-distance walking trail, a market and events throughout the year. When choosing a holiday rental, it helps to first consider which of these themes you want to shape your stay.

Loch Ness, legends and history

At the heart of Drumnadrochit is The Loch Ness Experience. It explores the 500-million-year history of Loch Ness and famous sightings of the Loch Ness Monster. The story begins with Mrs Aldie Mackay, manager of the Old Drumnadrochit Hotel. 14 April 1933 is associated with the renewed momentum the Nessie legend gained in this hotel building. History is therefore part of the village itself, not just the scenery by the loch.

Nearby is Urquhart Castle, an iconic historic attraction about 2 miles away. Together with the themes of The Loch Ness Experience, it offers a clear choice for history enthusiasts: a visit focused on the history of the loch and the legend, or a trip to a nearby castle. The Deepscan Cruise offers a different emphasis, taking up to 12 guests out on Loch Ness.

Exploring the loch, Glen Urquhart and the walking trail

The land-based activities also differ considerably. The Affric Kintail Way starts in Drumnadrochit. With e-bike hire from the Loch Ness Hub, guests can explore Glen Urquhart, with its rolling hills, woodland paths and picturesque villages, as well as panoramic views of Loch Ness. This offers two different ways to spend an active day: setting out on a long-distance trail or exploring the landscape by e-bike.

Fish Loch Ness offers a guided Highland fishing experience, with hands-on instruction from local ghillie Stuart MacDonald. Fishing is available seasonally; tours start at the Loch Ness Hub. Castle Cruises also depart from there, and e-bike hire is available at the Hub. The Loch Ness Hub is a visitor information point run by the local community, in the Village Car Park in Drumnadrochit.

The Highland Cow Tour offers another perspective on life in the area. It includes a visit to a working croft above Drumnadrochit, run by the same family for eight generations. The experience also includes panoramic views of Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle, insights into crofting life and close encounters with Highland cattle. Unlike a boat trip on the loch or a hike, this experience puts the croft itself at the centre. Nessieland adds a monster adventure attraction to the options in Drumnadrochit.

Market and events throughout the year

The Market on the Green takes place twice a month in Drumnadrochit from April to October. Local craftspeople and producers sell handmade products there. The Glen Urquhart Gathering and Highland Games take place every year in August. The timing therefore depends on the period and occasion: the market offers recurring opportunities to visit over several months, while the Gathering and Games are held in August. Check event dates before your trip.

When looking for a holiday rental in Drumnadrochit, the mix of activities you want each day can make the difference: history and Nessie themes, activities on Loch Ness, the landscape of Glen Urquhart, or a visit timed to coincide with an event. Urquhart Castle is close enough to plan as a separate trip, while the Affric Kintail Way starts right in the village. Choose where to stay according to which of these experiences matters most to you.
