Dunvegan combines impressive history with garden landscapes, walks and nature experiences. At its heart is Dunvegan Castle, Scotland’s oldest continuously inhabited castle. For 800 years, it has been the ancestral seat of the clan chiefs of Clan MacLeod. Its fabric comprises at least ten building phases dating from the 13th century to the 1850s. Dunvegan Castle and Its Gardens

Dunvegan Castle & Gardens is located one mile north of the village of Dunvegan in the northwest of the Isle of Skye. The walled garden was created around 1810; in the water garden, winding paths cross streams via bridges.

Visitors can choose between guided tours and self-guided visits with a castle guide. Dunvegan Castle & Gardens is open daily from 1 April to 15 October, from 10:00 to 17:30, with last admission at 17:00. The gardens are accessible at ground level from designated parking areas in the castle car park opposite the main entrance and ticket office. Some garden paths are steep because of the terrain, however. This information is more important for planning your day than a blanket assessment of the entire grounds.

History, Museum and Seals

Dunvegan’s history can also be encountered beyond the castle. St Mary's Church and Burial Ground is designated as a Scheduled Monument in Dunvegan. Dun Fiadhairt, also a designated Scheduled Monument, is located nearby. In the centre of Dunvegan, the Giant Angus MacAskill Museum displays exhibits, personal artefacts, photographs and larger-than-life representations relating to Angus MacAskill. The collection was curated by the MacAskill family.

A special experience on the water is a 25-minute boat trip from Dunvegan Castle to a colony of grey seals in Loch Dunvegan. The boats depart daily between 10:00 and 17:00 from the landing below the castle; the last departure is at 16:30. Trips depend on sea and weather conditions. In the garden, the Wild Wood Trail is one of the activities for children and complements the cultural castle visit with an opportunity for discovery of its own.

Walks for Different Day Plans

There are various routes to choose from around Dunvegan. The route to the Coral Beaches near Claigan is rated as easy in the Dunvegan area and is 4 km long. The Dun Fiadhairt Walk is a short, moderate 3 km hike leading to the remains of an Iron Age broch. This allows you to choose between a shorter route with a historical destination and a route described as easy, without planning both excursions in the same way.

The Dunvegan Two Churches Walk is an easy walk through woodland and open moorland. It starts at the car park of Duirinish Church of Scotland in the village of Dunvegan. Healaval Forest is also connected to Route SL06.02 in Dunvegan. Improvements to the trail surface and drainage were carried out there in 2012 along a network of forestry roads.
