Cathedral, Dock and Beatles
Liverpool Cathedral is the largest cathedral in Great Britain and the fifth-largest cathedral in the world. Admission is free for visitors. The Tower Experience offers a 360-degree view from the roof of the highest cathedral in the United Kingdom. This combines an impressive place of worship with a unique perspective over the city.
The Beatles Story, an immersive attraction about the lives, times and music of the Beatles, is located at the Royal Albert Dock. Its rooms create an authentic atmosphere of the 1960s; audio guides are available in twelve languages. Albert Dock is also located at the dock, a Conservation Area protected because of its special architectural and historic interest.
Museums for Curious Days
The Museum of Liverpool is one of the world’s leading city-history museums and has more than 8,000 square metres of designated public space. The World Museum is a treasure trove of objects from around the world and offers exhibitions on space, planetarium shows and interactive performances at the Treasure House Theatre.
For younger children, Little Liverpool is an interactive gallery for children under seven. Liverpool Central Library combines historic rooms with facilities for young visitors: it houses the Grade II listed Picton Reading Room and Hornby Library. Both have Grade II listed status. Its collections date back to the 13th century. There is also a family area with books and free computers for young people up to the age of 14.
Football and Unusual City History
The LFC Stadium Tour & Museum takes visitors behind the scenes at Anfield Stadium and includes areas normally reserved for Liverpool FC players and staff. The LFC Museum displays all of Liverpool FC’s major trophies together, including six European Cups.
Beneath the city, Williamson Tunnels offers tours through part of its tunnel network. Here, visitors can see an underground world created by Joseph Williamson in the early 19th century. The Joseph Williamson Heritage Centre explores his life and times through exhibitions. Western Approaches offers private tours based on the true stories of people who worked in the bunker and explores the facility’s role in coordinating the Battle of the Atlantic.
Music, Markets and Lively Venues
Liverpool Philharmonic Hall is a Grade II listed Art Deco venue where internationally renowned artists perform. The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra gives more than 100 performances per season. Together, Liverpool Philharmonic Hall and the Music Room host around 400 concerts and events each year; the Music Room also supports local and emerging talent.
St George’s Hall is a historic Grade I listed building and an important venue. Four seasonal craft markets are held there each year, offering handmade products, local art, and food and drink stalls. Sefton Park Palm House adds to the architectural diversity as a Grade II* listed building.
