Nature and landscapes
Leighton Moss is home to the largest reed bed in north-west England and provides a habitat for, among others, otters, bitterns, marsh harriers and red deer. Except for the path to Lower Hide, all routes there are fully accessible; all observation hides are accessible to wheelchair users. Silverdale railway station is 250 metres from Leighton Moss and is located on the Manchester Airport/Preston–Barrow line.
Cycling
The Way of the Roses is a coast-to-coast route connecting Morecambe in Lancashire with Bridlington via Lancaster and York. The Lancashire Cycleway consists of a northern and a southern circular route, which meet in Whalley. It uses quiet country lanes, passes through scenic areas, is well signposted and can be reached from several railway stations along the route. Beacon Fell is also home to the Fellside Trail, a circular mountain-biking route that takes approximately one hour.
Walking
The Ribble Way follows the River Ribble from the coast near Preston to its source in the uplands of the Yorkshire Dales. The route is 70 miles long and divided into seven sections. The Pendle Way is a 45-mile circular walking route divided into eight sections.
A multi-purpose route follows the River Lune approximately from Glasson near Cockerham via Lancaster to Bull Beck near Caton. The section between Lancaster and the Bull Beck Picnic Site follows the banks of the River Lune and is suitable for people with disabilities.
Culture and history
Lancaster Castle is one of the best-preserved castles in England and offers guided tours to visitors. These visit parts of the modern prison, Georgian courtrooms and medieval areas. Over the centuries, the courtrooms at Lancaster Castle have hosted, among other trials, the trials of the Lancashire Witches, who were sentenced to death in 1612.
Queen Street Mill is the world’s last surviving steam-powered 19th-century cotton weaving mill. The weaving shed still contains 308 Lancashire looms. Guided tours demonstrate the process from raw cotton to woven fabric and operate historic machinery.
The Roman bathhouse at Ribchester was built around AD 100 for cavalry soldiers and the local Romano-British population. The ruins of the Roman bathhouse are open to the public free of charge all year round from 9 a.m. until dusk.
Families and local produce
Pleasure Beach Resort offers high-speed roller coasters, family entertainment and a six-acre Nickelodeon Land with twelve rides. Bowland Food Hall showcases food and drink producers from Lancashire and provides local producers with a platform to sell their products.
