Holiday apartment in Gateshead: art, parks and riverside paths
Accommodation in Gateshead
Gateshead combines contemporary art, industrial history, parkland landscapes and paths along the Tyne and Derwent. The range extends from striking cultural venues and historic buildings to circular walks, gardens and river connections. At the same time, Newcastle lies directly within the shared urban and river setting, so the different facets around Gateshead can be seen in a diverse geographical context.
Culture
On the Gateshead Quayside, BALTIC is housed in a former flour mill that was converted into a six-storey contemporary art gallery in 2002. BALTIC has no permanent collection. As a result, visitors see art on every visit that they have not seen before. The location is a 10- to 15-minute walk from Gateshead town centre. From Newcastle Quayside, BALTIC can be reached on foot via the Gateshead Millennium Bridge.
Industrial history is directly connected to the function of Dunston Staiths: the staiths opened in 1893 so that coal could be loaded directly onto ships. Dunston Staiths is designated as a Scheduled Monument and listed as a Grade II building. The Shipley Art Gallery offers a different cultural focus. It opened on 29 November 1917 and holds a Designated Collection of national importance. The Glasshouse is home to the Royal Northern Sinfonia orchestra. The Glasshouse Music Education Centre has 26 rooms for teaching, practice, workshops and recording.
Nature and paths
At Gibside, the Wonders of Nature Trail begins and ends at the Market Place; the route is circular. Saltwell Park has a lake with a path along the shore. The park also includes gardens dating from around 1853 to 1870 and a public park design by Edward Kemp from 1876. Saltwell Park covers 55 acres and is home to twelve Grade II listed buildings, including Saltwell Towers.
The Tyne Derwent Way is a nine-mile walking trail connecting the centre of Gateshead with the Derwent Valley. It begins at St Mary’s Heritage Centre and ends at Gibside. Along the way, it passes through Gateshead Riverside Park and Dunston Staiths. Along the Tyne and Derwent rivers, the route connects nature, art and history.
For cycling routes, there is National Cycle Network Route 141, also known as The Keelmans Way. It connects the upper Tyne with Central Gateshead and the Bill Quay area.
City and river
Newcastle lies on the north bank of the River Tyne and is connected to Gateshead by seven bridges. The Gateshead Millennium Bridge was the first bridge of its kind that could tilt sideways to allow boats to pass. South of Gateshead, on a hillside overlooking the A1, stands a large contemporary sculpture by Antony Gormley.
