Bishop Auckland: Culture, History and Trails
Accommodation in Bishop Auckland
Bishop Auckland combines an impressive cultural history with a range of opportunities for walks and cycling. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday cottage can choose accommodation that suits their own interests: art and history are at the heart of the destination, while several trails allow for active days of varying lengths and difficulty levels.
Culture and history in Bishop Auckland
The Spanish Gallery is the first gallery in the United Kingdom dedicated to the art and culture of the Spanish Golden Age. The West Mural Tower at Auckland Castle offers a different historical perspective and is a Grade I listed building. The virtual Heritage Tour of Bishop Auckland explores the town’s history and development from Roman times to the present day, making it a standalone way to familiarise yourself with the area.
County Durham’s industrial past is also present. The Mining Art Gallery showcases the resilience and courage of the people who lived and worked in the mines. A visit provides insight into the art, culture and context of the mining industry, as well as its importance to the history of County Durham. Bishop Auckland Town Hall is another historic Grade II listed building. Escomb Saxon Church is also located near Bishop Auckland; built in the 7th century, it contains a Roman arch and Roman stonework.
Trails for different holiday days
For a longer cycle ride, the Bishop Auckland/Brandon Loop is available. The moderate route is 17 miles long and runs mostly away from road traffic. Those who prefer a shorter walk can take the Bishop Auckland Trail – Short, a relatively easy 2¾-mile (4½ km) route that takes around 1 hour. At 4½ miles (7¼ km), the Bishop Auckland Trail – Long is longer, moderately difficult and passes through peaceful countryside and woodland.
Another option is the Auckland Way Railway Path. The 4.3-mile route connects Bishop Auckland and Spennymoor, follows a former railway line and is used for walking and cycling. This makes it possible to combine cultural sightseeing with short walks or more extensive activities when planning your trip, without making every day the same.
Getting there and local impressions
For arriving by train, Bishop Auckland railway station is a useful point of reference: it is served by Northern Rail and offers connections from the mainline station in Darlington. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore weigh up whether you mainly want to explore cultural attractions, take the rail connection into account or combine as many different daily activities as possible.
Culinary events also form part of the town’s character. More than 150 traders took part in the Bishop Auckland Food Festival 2026. The Bishops Shop offered another glimpse into local history, presenting a collection of artefacts and stories about amateur football; it was temporarily located in a prominent position at Bishop Auckland’s central Market Place.
Further places for planning your trip
If you would like to compare Bishop Auckland with other destinations when planning your trip, you can also include Barnard Castle, Staindrop, Byers Green, Seaham, Evenwood, Sacriston, Stanhope and Shildon in your selection. When choosing accommodation, you can therefore weigh up whether you want to prioritise cultural highlights or active days.
