Dungiven – Priory, Castle and Benbradagh Trails
Accommodation in Dungiven
Dungiven combines an impressive cultural history with a landscape that can be explored along a variety of routes. The character of the town is shaped by Dungiven Priory, Dungiven Castle, Benbradagh Mountain and the walking trails of the North Sperrins. If you are planning a trip, you can combine historical discoveries and active days here according to the interests of your travel group.
The Priory and O'Cahan History
Dungiven Priory is a 12th-century Augustinian priory church closely associated with the O'Cahans. The chancel contains the tomb of Cooey-na-Gall O'Cahan, an O'Cahan chieftain from the 15th century. Cooey-na-Gall O'Cahan died in 1385. This gives the Priory a particularly tangible connection to the history of the O'Cahans, focusing not only on a building but also on a specific historical figure.
The tomb is known as O'Cahan's Tomb. The Gallowglasses depicted on it, Scottish mercenaries, suggest that it may have been created by a craftsman from western Scotland. For travellers interested in culture, the appeal lies in this combination of medieval architecture, family history and the visible details of the tomb. You can therefore regard Dungiven Priory as a focus of your trip planning without reducing the historical impressions to a single year.
Dungiven Castle and the Landscape along the River Roe
Dungiven Castle is an early Victorian Gothic Revival castle built on the site of an earlier structure. It occupies a commanding position overlooking the River Roe. Parts of the original bawn wall have survived and display a variety of old and new features. The grounds of Dungiven Castle are also home to the Environmental Park. This creates a clear thematic option when choosing accommodation: you can focus your stay more strongly on architectural history, the landscape and the history of the estate.
Dungiven lies at the foot of Benbradagh Mountain and in the heart of an area of outstanding natural beauty. A worthwhile contrast to the cultural history is therefore to head towards Benbradagh. The North Sperrins Way leaves Dungiven via Curragh Road and climbs four kilometres along the south-western flank of Benbradagh. A detour follows an 800-metre path to the summit. The summit is 465 metres high and offers views across Benedy Glen, Glenshane Pass and the high Sperrin Peaks to the south.
Walking Trails for Different Travel Plans
Anyone planning a longer hike will find the North Sperrins Way, a 37-mile walking route. It forms part of both the Ulster Way and the International Appalachian Trail. A section of the International Appalachian Trail in the Causeway Coast and Glens begins south of Glenshane, heads towards Dungiven and then continues through the North Sperrins towards Binevenagh and Castlerock. These routes show that Dungiven can be discovered not only through individual attractions but also through its integration into wider walking networks.
For a more local route selection, the Dungiven Walk describes a route via Ballyquin Road, Main Street and Garvagh Road. Just before Derryware Bridge, the path turns left and then returns to Ballyquin Road. Nearby, Banagher Glen Nature Reserve lies about four miles south of Dungiven at the end of Magheramore Road. There, a walking path follows a paved road from the car park to Banagher Dam and onwards to Altnaheglish Reservoir.
Considering Dungiven as an Accommodation Base
When searching for a holiday apartment in Dungiven, you can focus on the balance of culture and activity you want. For a multigenerational trip, it may make sense not to treat historical destinations and longer hikes as the same day's programme, but to consider the interests of fellow travellers separately. Those interested in culture can focus on the Priory and Castle, while walkers can include Benbradagh, the North Sperrins Way or Banagher Glen Nature Reserve in their plans. This allows Dungiven to remain a versatile base for a trip whose pace you set yourself.
