Butley’s priory history, dating back to 1171, and the active metalworking at Butley Mills Studios give the village two distinct cultural themes. The studios are located at the head of Butley Creek in rural Suffolk, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Historic architecture, contemporary craft and a rural setting offer different perspectives on a stay in Butley.

Priory Heritage from Different Periods

Butley Priory was founded in 1171 as an Augustinian priory. The gatehouse and other parts of the former priory remain at Abbey Farm. Butley Abbey and Priory Gate House was a former gatehouse of Butley Abbey, converted for residential use around 1734. This later residential use is clearly distinct from the monastic history associated with its foundation.

On the north side of the gatehouse is a heraldic panel with 35 shields in five rows. The remains of Butley Abbey Church date from around 1300 and preserve an arch to the south transept. The transept is the side arm of a church; the surviving arch makes the building’s form more tangible than a date alone. The former refectory also adds to the building’s history: it dates from the early 13th century, and its walls were incorporated into 20th-century farm buildings. A refectory was the dining hall of a monastic community. The gatehouse, church arch and refectory thus offer different clues to the priory’s history. The dates place these buildings and remains in different historical contexts: 1171 marks the foundation, around 1734 the conversion for residential use, and remains dating from around 1300 survive at the church.

Bronze Craft on Butley Creek

Butley Mills Studios houses a working bronze foundry and forge. It also has an informal, understated cultural space for visitors. Its focus differs from the priory heritage: rather than historic buildings, it is about contemporary craft and a space for visitors. The emphasis is therefore not only on the age of buildings, but also on working with metal today. The studios are located at the head of Butley Creek in rural Suffolk, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The workshop and landscape are two tangible aspects of this place, while the priory’s history is shaped by its architectural forms, surviving remains and their different historical contexts.
