Southend-on-Sea combines an exceptional pier with coast, culture and a variety of excursion destinations. Southend Pier is the world's longest pleasure pier. At the same time, the pier extends 1.33 miles into the Thames Estuary, giving the town a distinctive geographical character.
Coast
The coast includes a dedicated cycle path that is around six miles long and runs from Chalkwell Beach to Shoebury East Beach. The route therefore connects two named beach sections and is one of the town's clearly defined recreational options.
Culture and History
Southend Central Museum is located in a Grade II listed building that reopened as a museum in 1981. The permanent collection at the Beecroft Art Gallery comprises more than 2,000 works, ranging from 17th-century Dutch paintings to contemporary works. This collection includes works by Molenaer, Ruisdael, Berchem, Rossetti, Constable and Edward Lear. The gallery also presents changing special exhibitions and rotating displays from its permanent collection.
Southchurch Hall is a medieval Grade I listed building with a moat in Southend-on-Sea. The present Southchurch Hall was built approximately between 1321 and 1364; the Great Hall continues to be presented in its 14th-century form. The outline of Southchurch Hall's moat is still visible.
