Swaffham lies at the northernmost point of the Brecklands and combines a long market tradition with reminders of its trading and architectural history. Georgian buildings, the Market Cross and the church of St Peter & St Paul offer different historical points of interest; the Market Town Trail adds a self-guided walk. If you like to connect your stay with local history, you’ll find several themes to choose from here.

Market tradition and the Butter Cross

The Charter Market is held every Saturday. From April to September, it is open from 8:00 to 14:30, and from October to March, from 8:00 to 14:00. Check the market schedule before you arrive if you want to plan your visit in advance. The Saturday market has been running for over 800 years, giving this regular event a long history.

Swaffham Market Cross, also known as the Butter Cross, was built in 1781–1783 for George Walpole, the third Earl of Orford. As the Butter Cross, it served as a collection point for locally produced “Cambridge” butter. Here, a market tradition that has grown over centuries stands alongside a building from the late 18th century. The Cross also connects the town’s history with the trade of a specific product.

Church, townhouses and social history

The present building of St Peter & St Paul’s Church dates from 1454. Its distinctive architectural details include a hammerbeam roof with 192 angels carved from chestnut. The church offers a different perspective on Swaffham’s history from the town’s Georgian heritage: its buildings reflect Swaffham’s longstanding role as a trading centre. Together, the different building periods show the many historical perspectives the town has to offer.

The Museum of Swaffham presents the social history of Swaffham and the surrounding region from the Stone Age to the present day. The Swaffham Information Centre is also located in the museum. This adds social history to the architectural and commercial history, offering a perspective on how the town and its surroundings can be viewed across long periods of time.

Walking trail and events

The Market Town Trail is a self-guided walk through the town’s history, linking ten significant places in the town. It is free to access and suitable for all ages. Unlike the Saturday market, the focus here is not on a specific time slot, but on the opportunity to explore several historic places along the route.

The Assembly Rooms host concerts, exhibitions, dances, sales and the “Friday Indoor Market”. As events may change, check the current programme for a specific date. This allows you to consider a market visit, a historical walk and an event as different focal points for your stay.

Consider Swaffham when choosing a holiday rental if its market tradition and local history suit the kind of stay you want. The Saturday market offers a regular event, while the trail provides a self-guided way to explore the town’s history; the church, townhouses and museum add architectural and social history to these themes. You can tailor your accommodation search to the experiences that interest you most in Swaffham.
