Discover Rickmansworth: Lakes, Paths and Culture
Rickmansworth combines a varied lake landscape with waterways, opportunities for observing nature and historic sites. This makes the town interesting if, for your trip, you are looking not only for accommodation but also for a range of ideas for day trips. Around the Rickmansworth Aquadrome, nature, exercise and family-oriented activities are closely centred thematically; at the same time, churches, museums, markets and performances add to the programme.
Lakes, Waterfowl and Paths by the Water
The Rickmansworth Aquadrome is a Local Nature Reserve with the two large lakes, Batchworth Lake and Bury Lake. Both lakes are surrounded by woodland and open grassland. The paths around the lakes are fully accessible. The Aquadrome is also notable to nature enthusiasts because of its importance for waterfowl; the species mentioned include mallards and great crested grebes. The Aquadrome forms the northern gateway to the Colne Valley Regional Park.
Scotsbridge also offers a different perspective on the landscape. There, you can walk along the River Chess and observe wildlife. The River Chess at Scotsbridge is considered a globally rare chalk stream. Anyone wishing to combine nature experiences and culture during a stay can take these different focal points into account when choosing their holiday apartment.
Waterways, Excursions and Active Days
The Ebury Way is intended for cyclists, walkers and horse riders. Along its route, it crosses the rivers Colne, Chess and Gade as well as the Grand Union Canal. At the Rickmansworth Aquadrome, sailing, water skiing, fishing and model sailing are among the activities represented by local clubs. Regular boat trips operate between Batchworth Lock and Stockers Lock. This allows you to plan different forms of exercise by the water for your trip without limiting the town to just one activity.
A specific point of reference for arriving is Rickmansworth Station: it is a five-minute walk from the Rickmansworth Aquadrome. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can therefore first consider whether nature and waterways, cultural activities or a mixture of both should be the focus of your stay.
Family Activities and Important Information
At the Rickmansworth Aquadrome, the Ebury Play Area is open following renovation. Scotsbridge also has a skate park, a play area, tennis courts and football pitches. At the same time, the Woodland Walk remains closed because of highly hazardous asbestos discoveries near the path. This distinction should be taken into account when planning your day if you want to combine several activities for children and young people.
Historic Sites, Museum and Culture
The Bury, a large timber-framed building dating from the 16th century, stands on the southern edge of Rickmansworth. It was once the manor house of Rickmansworth. St Mary's Church offers further historical points of interest: the tower dates from 1630, and the 1896 window was created by Morris & Company; the main elements are by Sir Edward Burne-Jones. A guide takes visitors through the church and covers its architecture, history and furnishings. The Roman Catholic church of Our Lady Help of Christians and St Augustine's Hall are listed as Grade II buildings.
For changing cultural interests, Watersmeet serves as a venue for art and entertainment, with live performances taking place there. The nearby Three Rivers Museum of Local History shows how people in the Three Rivers area lived and worked. It is open from 2 to 4 pm on Wednesdays to Fridays and from 10 am to 2 pm on Saturdays. In addition, the monthly market in Rickmansworth High Street has been held since April 2022 and attracts more than 40 traders.
