Discover Kilburn: History, Memorial Sites and Family Moments
Accommodation in Kilburn
Kilburn combines an engaging local history with small discoveries for different travel preferences. Historic buildings, memorial sites, traces of earlier work and activities for babies, toddlers and preschool children give a stay several facets. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Kilburn can therefore choose the village as a base for a holiday centred on cultural history and time together.
Historic Buildings with Distinctive Details
Among the notable buildings is Top Farmhouse, which is listed in the National Heritage List for England. Also recorded there are Cruck Barn and the associated outbuildings at Manor Court. Cruck Barn and its outbuildings date from the 15th century and were encased and extended in the early 19th century. In the western part of the building, five cruck trusses reaching up to the ridge have been preserved. At the ridge, they reach approximately 25 feet in height – a detail that makes the construction easy for younger travellers to appreciate as well.
Kilburn Hall also reflects several historical layers. The building dates back to the 17th century and was extended in 1883 and in the early 20th century. A visible early-18th-century gable bears a stone plaque inscribed “HWE 1712”. Those interested in architectural history can find different periods here not only as dates, but in specific building elements.
Remembrance, Faith and Earlier Work
The Kilburn War Memorial is an obelisk made of polished grey and red granite and marble from the early 20th century. It commemorates those who fell in the South African War; the names of those who died in both world wars were added later. Another historical trace is the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel on Highfield Road, which was rebuilt in 1891 as an imposing brick building with space for 350 people. The former Baptist Chapel on the same road was built in 1832.
The village’s history also includes the remains of Kilbourne Colliery, with iron rails, points and a turntable. On the site of the former flour mill, the remains of the waterwheel housing and several feeder channels are visible. The former flour mill site lies on the footpath between Kilburn and Holbrook. Near Kilburn Toll Bar, extensive willow stands and workshops also recall the production of boxes for packing and transporting pots at Denby Pottery. The former main road between Ripley and Derby is now designated the B6179.
Nature, Community and a Stay with Children
The Kilburn Nature Reserve & Memorial Area is also a memorial site. Trees and shrubs have been planted there in memory of deceased relatives; bat and bird nesting boxes have also been installed. This place combines observing nature with a quieter form of remembrance.
For families with young children, Derbyshire Toy Libraries offers a public Stay-&-Play session for babies, toddlers and preschool children at Kilburn Village Hall. The Village Hall is easily accessible via its side entrance and is accessible for people with disabilities. The Kilburn Community Association also supports an annual Kilburn Community Day. This means a stay can include historical themes as well as community events and age-appropriate activities.
The Right Accommodation for Your Travel Plans
Which holiday apartment suits your trip depends above all on which side of Kilburn you would like to discover. For travellers interested in history, the buildings, chapels, memorial and traces of earlier industries are the main attractions. Those travelling with young children can include the public Stay-&-Play session and the Village Hall’s activities in their plans. For quieter days, the Nature Reserve & Memorial Area is suitable as a separate thematic focus. Accommodation in Kilburn can therefore be adapted to different daily plans without all travellers having to share the same interests.
