Hiking and Winter
Fort de la Turra was built between 1893 and 1900 to monitor the Mont-Cenis plateau on the French-Italian border. It is a hiking destination accessible from the Mont-Cenis Pass. Fort de la Turra offers spectacular views of Lake Mont-Cenis, Italy, Val Cenis-Lanslebourg and Haute Maurienne Vanoise.
Fort de Malamot was built in 1889 at an altitude of 2,850 m to monitor the Mont-Cenis Pass and the Italian border. It can be reached via a day hike and offers views of Lake Mont-Cenis. Only traces of the surrounding wall and the ruins of the defensive barracks remain of the fort.
The hike to Fort du Mont-Froid leads to an altitude of 2,822 m and offers views of the Vanoise glaciers and the Grande Casse.
Culture and History
The Musée de la Pyramide du Mont-Cenis presents the history of the Mont-Cenis Pass and local life, including transport, villages and the dam that changed the area. The museum can be visited independently, without a guided tour. It is one of the highest-altitude museums in Europe and is located at 2,100 m above sea level.
The Church of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption was built between 1820 and 1830 with a Greek cross floor plan and in the neoclassical style.
Nature
The Jardin Alpin du Mont-Cenis showcases more than 100 species of alpine flowers and plants. It also offers a themed trail and numerous activities for families in summer.
