Situated above the Loire, Saint-Jean-Saint-Maurice-sur-Loire offers exceptional viewpoints over the river. The landscapes are shaped by the Loire gorges and viticulture. In the village centre, the keep, also known as the Tour de Saint-Maurice, towers 17 metres above the village centre as a medieval remnant and offers a 360-degree view of the reservoir waters. During the restoration of the keep in 1989, a platform was installed at its summit, from which visitors can enjoy a viewpoint.
Nature and trails
The GR de Pays Autour des gorges de la Loire begins at La Cure in Saint-Maurice and runs above and along the shores of Lake Villerest. The hiking trail is 36 kilometres long, moderately difficult and marked in yellow and red.
The 90-kilometre Cluny–Le Puy-en-Velay branch of the Way of St James also passes through the Roannais. Saint-Jean-Saint-Maurice-sur-Loire is the last Village de Caractère in the Loire crossed on this route.
Culture and history
The Église de Saint-Maurice dates from the 12th century. Its choir contains 13th-century wall paintings, including an image of Saint James the Greater, indicating the route of the Way of St James through the village.
The present-day Église de Saint-Jean was built in 1872 on the remains of a priory. The portal and the wall bell tower from the 11th century have survived from the former priory.
The Manoir de La Mure was built in the 16th century and is classified as a protected building.

The free Baludik puzzle trail takes visitors through the village by smartphone over 1.5 kilometres and enables them to meet local craftspeople.
From March to November, La Cure hosts three exhibitions each year presenting materials and craft skills. La Cure is also a tourist information centre and a boutique for art and crafts.
“La Poterie de La Cure” represents ceramics in Saint-Jean-Saint-Maurice-sur-Loire.
At the Villerest dam, the Club Nautique du Port de la Caille enables boats and jet skis to be launched every day.
Visitor options
The Église de Saint-Maurice is part of the guided village tour and can be visited individually free of charge. The local association offers tours for visitors who are visually impaired or blind.
