The elevated plateau of Velanne, whose centre is formed by Mont de Velanne, offers sweeping views eastwards over the Chartreuse Massif and northwards towards Bugey and Épine. Culture and History

Amid the forests on Mont de Velanne, only ruins of the Tour O’Mahony remain today. The hunting lodge, built in the 19th century, served as accommodation for a small detachment of soldiers during the First World War.

The Église de Velanne was built on the site of an old castle, blessed in 1845 and completed in 1877. Velanne’s patronal feast takes place on 26 December in honour of Saint Étienne.

In the Boisements humides du Malafossant wetland forest area, shade-loving saxifrages and ferns find suitable living conditions. The Malafossant is designated as a ZNIEFF along its entire course between Velanne and Saint-Jean-d’Avelanne.

The Forêts riveraines des ruisseaux des Rajans, du Caron et de la Combe Pigna are a type I ZNIEFF comprising wooded, cool and damp riparian areas along the named streams.

Paths and Routes

Velanne’s hiking trails pass by the Sacré Cœur and the Tour O’Mahony. The Le Sacré Cœur hike continues across Velanne’s hilly plateau to the Sacré Cœur site. In addition, the hiking trails in the municipality of Velanne make it possible to discover the local fauna and flora in a natural setting.

The Via Sancti Martini is a route awarded the designation of Cultural Route of the Council of Europe, following in the footsteps of Saint Martin. The local section runs through Petit Velanne, Vicharière, Le Buisson and Les Rajans.

For e-bikes, the Les plateaux de Haute-Valdaine loop is described as an easy route covering 26.6 kilometres with 550 metres of elevation gain. From Montferrat, this e-bike loop reaches Velanne via the Route du Mont de Velanne.
