At Vernai, the remains of the Gallo-Roman villa were placed under protection as a French historic monument by decree of 18 June 1984.

Culture

At the Vernai archaeological site, visitors can see parts of the baths, a hydraulic mill, a granary and the accommodation of the estate manager. The still-visible, recently restored remains at Vernai also include the immediate surroundings of the present-day church, a thermal sector and a farm building.

The ancient experimental garden was created in 2018 on the site of the Gallo-Roman villa of Vernai. It is based on the study and practical application of the treatises of Latin agronomists.

Saint-Romain Church was built in the Early Middle Ages, probably in the 9th or 10th century. It was extensively remodelled in the 19th century: the upper parts of the bell tower were rebuilt in 1849 by Hugues Quenin, and in 1875 a new nave oriented from north to south was built according to the plans and cost estimates of the road inspector Collomb.

The first mill at Peillard dates back to the 13th century. The mill retains machinery from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. On themed days devoted to bread or mills, the Peillard mill opens its doors to visitors.

Nature

The Marais de la Besseye is a large wetland extending across the municipalities of Saint-Romain-de-Jalionas and Villemoirieu. The 35-hectare area includes fens characterised by reed beds and Cladium, alder woods and dry meadows containing plant and animal species of importance for nature conservation.

The Vernai archaeological clearing lies on the edge of the Marais du Grand-Plan.
