Saint-Auban-Sur-L'ouvèze: apartments and holiday homes
Saint-Auban-sur-l’Ouvèze is a village situated on a rocky spur 650 metres high. It overlooks the confluence of the Ouvèze and Charuis rivers, combining a clearly defined elevated position with the landscape of the river valleys.
Nature and hiking trails
On the GRP Tour des Baronnies provençales, stage 3 from Vergol to Saint-Auban-sur-l’Ouvèze ends at the Fontaine d’en Haut in the village. The subsequent stage 4 leads eastwards from Saint-Auban-sur-l’Ouvèze through marl landscapes and species-rich forests.
Several trails explore the surrounding area in different ways. The circular trail Chemin des Châtaigniers starts at Place Péquin in the upper village and leads into a former chestnut forest. The circular trail Sur les traces de l’ours follows the GR91 long-distance hiking trail to the Caverne de l’Ours; from there, there is a view over the Ouvèze Valley. The trail over the Serre de Rioms offers a viewpoint over the Gorges du Charruis.
The Haute Huche hike is 12 kilometres long, takes around four hours and starts in the hamlet of Pouzet. The local hiking information points out that some trails disappeared after the land consolidation and recommends taking a GPS device or a detailed map.
The landscape around the village also reveals various facets: the plains around Saint-Auban-sur-l’Ouvèze are home to lavender fields and cypress hedges. Chestnut trees grow on the mountain slopes in siliceous soils.
Culture and history
The Église Saint-Pierre has had its current appearance since 1860. During the work carried out in 1860, it was extended by two bays and fitted with a bell-gable tower. The village features houses dating from the Renaissance to the Age of Enlightenment, paved lanes and vaulted passageways known as “soustets”.
The historic remains of Saint-Auban-sur-l’Ouvèze include the restored Porte Basse and the preserved towers of the former castle. In the 16th century, the Pape-Saint-Auban lords transformed their castle into a bastion of Protestantism.
The Protestant community cemetery in Saint-Auban contains around 150 graves. It is associated with the period following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes; the graves cannot be unambiguously assigned to the 19th century.
Saint-Auban-sur-l’Ouvèze can be visited independently or in groups without a guide every day throughout the year, with free admission.
Local production and market
Saint-Auban-sur-l’Ouvèze is considered the place of origin of the “Clos d’Anguzon” brand, which emerged from a family tradition of handcrafted herbalism. LC 1802, formerly Le Chatelard 1802, produces and sells Provence-scented products in the village, including soaps, candles, home fragrances, lavender and lavandin sachets, herbes de Provence and essential oils.
At the LC 1802 production site in Saint-Auban-sur-l’Ouvèze, there is no regular sales boutique, but rather a stall for receiving some customers. The Marché estival in the town hall courtyard offers fruit, vegetables, honey, cheese, cured meats and refreshments. The market is scheduled to run from 1 July to 26 August; opening hours are Saturdays from 18:00 to 20:00.
