In the north chapel of the Église Saint-Pierre, there is a 17th-century statue of Saint Peter made of waxed wood. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Chavannes-Sur-Suran can keep the location in mind as a specific accommodation option.

History

The church of Chavannes was built between 1376 and 1408. On its northern side, it is flanked by a canons' chapel built by Alix de Chalon. The written record goes back a long way: Chavannes and Sélignat were the first two villages in the Suran Valley to be mentioned in a written document, Lothar's diploma, dating from 852. In addition, Chavannes was a border town for five centuries between the spheres of influence of the House of Savoy and the Counts of Burgundy.

Hiking and cycling

The Nivigne et Suran area has a well-developed network of signposted hiking trails with a hiking guide, as well as numerous opportunities for mountain biking routes. The Tour de Chavannes hiking route begins in Chavannes. It runs around the former Comtois town on the border between Franche-Comté and Savoy, passes through woodland and offers mountain and panoramic views. The route is intended for daily use throughout the year.

The circular hiking trail “Chavuissiat le petit, Corcelles et le bois vert”, Circuit pédestre No. 87, is 10 km long, takes 2 hours and 45 minutes, has an elevation difference of 70 m and is marked in yellow. The blue mountain bike circuit No. 6, “Vallée du Suran, Chavannes & Simandre”, also passes through Chavannes.

Nature

The Gour de la Rande is a karst depression that acts as a Vaucluse spring, or resurgence, during high water and feeds the stream. The Gour de la Rande can be reached on foot from Dhuys or Chavannes. The Suran is characterised by numerous fords where large stones lie across the current. The banks at the Gué de Corcelles were prepared for the passage of animals.
