Orches: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
In Orches, the 11.5 km-long “Nature et Horizons” hiking trail runs through partly bucolic landscapes and offers panoramic views of Orches. It is marked as circular trail no. 38, “NATURE ET HORIZONS”; an information sign is located at the starting point. A hiking guide published by Grand Châtellerault lists this circular trail for Orches together with the Caillou Saint-Martin.
Nature and Trails
The Caillou Saint-Martin is a stationary sandstone block approximately 1.80 m long and 1.65 m wide, standing about 80 cm high. The Neolithic polishing stone, known as the Caillou de Saint-Martin, has been classified as a historic monument since 30 May 1932.
Culture and History
The Eglise Saint-Hilaire was founded and built between the end of the 11th and the beginning of the 12th century. It is dedicated to Saint Hilaire and dependent on the Abbey of Saint-Benoît-de-Quinçay (Vienne). The church consists of a single-nave structure that is partly Romanesque, with a portal opening to the north dating from the second half of the 12th century. The building was constructed using cut stone as well as rubble stone made of local tuffeau quarried from the village’s underground stone quarries.
The epitaph of Simone Duquesne is set into the north wall of the Eglise Saint-Hilaire; it has been classified as a historic monument since 2 May 1956.
The Château de la Sitière stands on a small hill along the road to Richelieu. It is privately owned, cannot be visited, and is visible from the D-757.
Festivals
Local festivities in Orches include flea markets and the Fête du muguet. At the Fête de la musique held in Orches on 25 June 2022, the festival committee served more than 300 plates of moules-frites.
