Geographical location

Glénouze is situated in a hilly landscape on a slope and at the foot of the slope of the Dive. Near the hamlet of “La Corbinière”, the intersection of the 47th parallel north and the Greenwich meridian lies within the municipality.

Culture and history

The Notre-Dame/Saint-Léon church in Glénouze is of Romanesque origin and has an 18th-century wall bell tower. Its original small chapel was extended in 1506. Glénouze was once the seat of a seigneurie; the fief was subordinate to Château de Loudun.

The present-day Château de Jalnay was built in the 19th century, although its origins date back to the 17th century. The privately owned building is completely asymmetrical and conveys a strongly neoclassical impression. It consists of three adjoining sections and has three towers: two stand on the main façade, and a third in the centre of the garden façade. In the 17th century, Château de Jalnay was a winery; its cellars contain the remains of wine presses. It is surrounded by a four-hectare park.

The former cooperative bakery of Glénouze is a rare architectural testimony to a cooperative mode of production. It is considered the only building in the municipality without an agricultural use in the strict sense.

Nature

Glénouze has municipal hiking trails called “Les sentiers de Glénousa”. The municipality’s facilities also include the Étang des Courtils and a picnic area. The washhouse of Glénouze is considered charming. Tuffeau is identified as an important raw material in Glénouze’s landscape heritage.
