The Coteaux du Montmorélien Natura 2000 site comprises around fifty small hills on chalky or marly limestone soils from the Upper Cretaceous, with xerothermic dry grasslands, downy oak stands, juniper scrub, and locally occurring alkaline fens or nutrient-poor wet meadows of the Molinion alliance.
More than 30 orchid species have been recorded in the calcareous mesophilic or xerophilic grasslands of the Coteaux du Montmorélien.
