Puyravault: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Puyravault is located near the Bay of l’Aiguillon, at the mouth of the Sèvre Niortaise and at the gateway to the Marais poitevin. Those who choose Puyravault as a holiday destination want to rent a holiday apartment there.
Nature and Water
At the southern end of the Puyravault municipal area, successive lines of dykes bear witness to various stages in the creation of polders in the Marais. The Canal de Vienne rises in Moreilles, crosses Puyravault and continues as far as Sainte-Radégonde-des-Noyers.
The Porte de l’Epine is located at the mouth of the canal of the same name, on the municipal boundary between Puyravault and Sainte-Radégonde-des-Noyers. At low tide, it allows water to drain from the reclaimed marshes, and it closes at high tide to protect the marshes from flooding by tidal waters.
Culture and History
The Templar commandery of Puyravault was probably founded in the 12th or early 13th century as a monastic establishment with agricultural uses. Its grounds, enclosed by a surrounding wall, included a chapel, an adjoining cemetery, a residential building with a kitchen, refectory and dormitory, as well as agricultural outbuildings and communal buildings.
The Notre-Dame church in Puyravault was probably built largely in the 12th century. The Église templière Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption in Puyravault can be viewed as a landmark without visiting the interior.
Local Produce
The Verger d’Arômalice in Puyravault is an orchard managed according to an agroforestry system, with 400 fruit trees of old and local varieties. Visits and workshops are organised in the orchard throughout the year.
Les Pâtes de Lison produces farm-made pasta in Puyravault from durum wheat grown on the farm; the pasta bears the label of the Marais poitevin Regional Nature Park.
Biodiversity
Puyravault is one of ten municipalities in the Vendée taking part in the Marais poitevin Municipal Biodiversity Atlas from 2024 to 2026. As part of the three-year biodiversity programme in which Puyravault is involved, the participating municipalities are scheduled to host inventories, workshops, exhibitions, performances and walks, among other activities; the public programme is intended to help people discover local animal and plant species.
