Culture and History

One of the notable historical sites in Fontenay-le-Comte is the Château de Terre-Neuve. It is protected as a historic monument and was built in 1590 by Nicolas Rapin. The visit includes historical explanations and a guided tour of the interior.

In the first room visited, perfectly restored original wood paneling from the chamber of Louis XIV and the Molière Theater at the Château de Chambord adorns the room. The Hôtel de Grimoüard also tells the story of the site's construction: it was built in 1741 for the knight Pierre-Marthe de Grimoüard, reusing the cellars of an earlier property.

The Musée de Fontenay-le-Comte has held the designation “Musée de France” since February 10, 2003.

Anyone who combines the Château de Terre-Neuve, Parc Baron, and La Transfontenaysienne in their own travel itinerary may wish to rent a vacation apartment in Fontenay-le-Comte.
