History and Architecture
In the centre of the municipality stands the Colombier de la Motte Féodale on the former feudal or manorial motte, at the site of the former Château de Grainville, which was destroyed around 1580. The dovecote is estimated to date from the late 17th to early 18th century. Its base is made of sandstone, its walls of brick and alternating flint; above them is an octagonal roof.
The parish church of Notre-Dame preserves from the former church the base of the bell tower built by Simon Vitecoq in the first half of the 16th century and the west wall of the nave. Reconstruction began after 1700. The southern and northern doors bear the year 1714, while the upper sections of the bell tower were renewed in the 19th century. Patronage was held by the Abbey of Saint-Wandrille in the Seine-Maritime département.
The Grotte du Trou de Marie Marot, also known as “Trou à Pierrot”, consists of three caves carved into the rock face below the Bois de la Roquette. The entrance is on the Route du Colombier. The nickname “la Teinturière” also refers to the history of the village: it derives from “Tinctuaria”, mentioned in 1292 and probably associated with dye works on the banks of the Durdent.
The Musée Jean de Béthencourt tells the story of the Norman nobleman Jean de Béthencourt, who undertook the conquest of the Canary Islands at his own expense in 1402. It also provides visitors with information about the present-day Canary Islands and the special ties that Grainville-la-Teinturière maintains with them.
Landscape and Nature
Le Catelet is a slope located south of Grainville. A stone path leads from the church to its plateau, from which the municipality can be viewed across 180 degrees.
Les Basses Eaux cover 45 hectares in the Durdent Valley between Le Hanouard and Grainville-la-Teinturière. They consist of meadows, forests and ponds. Orchids, bats and invertebrates can be found along the Les Basses Eaux circular trail; the path follows ponds inhabited by fish, insects and herons.
