The Saint-Mélaine Church stands in Avesnes-en-Val on a site where a fortified castle stood in the Middle Ages. It is documented as early as 1468 as “Ecc. Sancti Melanii in villa d'Avesnes”. In the 16th century, it replaced an earlier Saint-Martin Church; in 1555, it was consecrated by the Bishop of Reims and dedicated to Saint Mélaine. Inside, Saint-Mélaine features a rib-vaulted ceiling with heraldic keystones.

Culture and History

The village’s religious architectural heritage also includes the Chapelle de Caude-Côte, which is also known as the Chapelle de Villy-le-Haut. For a long time, the Chapelle de Caude-Côte was a place of pilgrimage in honour of Saint Vincent.

The Saint-Nicolas Chapel originally served as the burial place of the Saint-Ouen family. Today, it is used as a baptistery.

Hiking

The Gratte-Panche hiking trail passes through Saint-Aignan in Avesnes-en-Val. In the Saint-Aignan area, the circular trail follows Rue Saint-Blaise, passes a wayside cross, and then continues along a path at the end of the street.
