La Lucerne-D'outremer: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

La Lucerne Abbey is one of the oldest Premonstratensian abbeys in Normandy. In 1928, it was classified as a French “Monument historique” (historic monument).

Culture

The self-guided tour of the abbey follows a signposted route with information panels. They explain the canons’ daily life as well as the restoration and preservation work carried out on the site.

The abbey includes a mill that was rebuilt around 1837 and fitted with four overshot water wheels to produce flour from wheat, barley and buckwheat. The abbey offers workshops for school classes throughout the year.

The Church of Notre-Dame is believed to date from the 13th century and, according to recent discoveries made during restoration work, may even partly date from the 10th century. It is rich in remarkable statues and paintings.

History

The former abbey church housed a spinning mill from 1794 to 1834; it was subsequently converted into a marble manufactory.

Events

The Friends of La Lucerne Abbey association organises a classical music festival at the abbey in summer and regularly offers musical events.

Trails and tours

The “Route des Abbayes à cheval” riding route begins at 3 L'Abbaye in La Lucerne-d'Outremer. It was specifically designed for riders, with paved sections kept to a minimum.

There are circular trails in La Lucerne-d'Outremer, and municipal paths cross the forest. Visitors can also take part in a guided village tour with local village guides.

Nature

The 370-hectare private forest is mainly planted with oak, chestnut, beech and coniferous trees. Deer and wild boar live in the forest.
