Gréville-Hague is the birthplace of Jean-François Millet, who was born in the hamlet of Gruchy on October 4, 1814. A full statue of Jean-François Millet, made from 700 kg of bronze and created by Louis Derbré, stands in the village square. The birthplace of Jean-François Millet offers a tour featuring original works, everyday objects, agricultural tools, and audiovisual presentations about his life and work. It conveys his childhood, landscapes, and daily activities, as well as the history of L’Angélus in the artistic context of the 19th century.

In the hamlet of Gruchy, the Maison du Puits is distinguished by a covered outside staircase and a covered well. The building’s façade and roofs were listed as historic monuments on August 31, 1993, because of their depiction in several of Millet’s paintings.

History

Visible remains of a 13th-century chapel are preserved today near the Manoir de Saint-Nazaire. The Sainte-Colombe Church was built in the 12th century in the Romanesque style and is listed as a historic monument. A chapel in the church also houses the famous statues of the Entombment of Christ, which were discovered in 1993.

The Mur Blanc was built near the coastal path in 1887 and served as an important visual landmark for sailors.

Landscape

Castel Vendon, also known as Batterie Landemer, comprises four casemates built by the Germans as part of the Atlantic Wall. The rocky promontory lies above the cliffs and the English Channel and is a popular spot for coastal walks.

The GR®223 long-distance hiking trail runs along cliffs lined with ferns and heather, whose colors are particularly vivid in autumn.

The starting point of the route can be reached via the “Gréville-Hague – Mairie” stop on the Cap Cotentin bus network; the stop is 1.1 km from the circular trail. The route “In the Footsteps of Jean-François Millet – no. 101” begins in the hamlet of Gruchy, descends to the birthplace of Jean-François Millet, and then continues along the coastal path in Gréville-Hague.
