Sailly-Sur-La-Lys: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Maison de la Prévôté is the oldest building in the municipality. It was formerly the residence of the Prévôt; today, it is a listed monument. The building is located between the Saint-Vaast Church and the Lys.

Culture and History

The Saint-Vaast Church was rebuilt in 1613 and has three naves and a porch. The present-day Saint-Vaast sanctuary was inaugurated in 1928; its tower was rebuilt from white stone and bricks and is 45 metres high. Inside, there is an altar with a statue of the saint and three large windows depicting scenes from his life.

The Prévôté included a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary, living quarters, prisons and a courtroom. Its entrance was rebuilt in 1612 and protected by two semicircular sandstone towers within a fortified enclosure.

The church of Bac-Saint-Maur was created by converting a factory warehouse built in 1900. It stands in an industrial area and was established in connection with the Salmon spinning mill. In 1914, the Auguste Salmon textile complex comprised a flax spinning mill in Sailly-sur-la-Lys in the Bac-Saint-Maur district and three linen weaving mills.

The Maison du billard is listed in Sailly-sur-la-Lys as a sight and as a building for Flemish games. The Chapelle Notre Dame de la Consolation is considered one of the few buildings in Sailly-sur-la-Lys that were not destroyed during the First World War.

The Château de Bac-Saint-Maur was renovated and extended in 2022; the plans included a reception area, a gastronomic restaurant and rooms for associations. The landscape concept for the Château de Bac-Saint-Maur highlights an avenue, a forecourt, a terrace, a large lawn, a grove of trees, a basin and waterside areas.

Nature

The Prés du Moulin Madame Regional Nature Reserve was established in 2015 and covers 9.0693 hectares in Sailly-sur-la-Lys. It features a landscaped path with several information panels along the Lys and the flowering wet meadows. The area is one of the last examples of alluvial hay meadows in the lower Lys region.

The Prés du Moulin Madame is home to 144 plant species, including 14 species of particular conservation value due to their endangerment, rarity or legal protection.

Paths and Water

Along the banks of the Lys, there is a walking trail beside the river, a nautical landing stage and a fitness trail with 15 stations. La Lys à vélo is described as a river tourism activity along the Lys that is suitable for families and friends.

The Chemin Champêtre is an easy, 9-kilometre hiking trail with a stated duration of 2 hours and 30 minutes. It runs between fields, the nature reserve and the towpaths along the Lys. The trail begins at the town hall or the post office on Rue de la Lys in Sailly-sur-la-Lys.

Along the Lys near the Halte nautique de Sailly-sur-la-Lys, you can observe, among other birds, herons, kingfishers and great crested grebes.
