Izel-lès-Équerchin: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Tour du bois route runs through fields. It follows a road for only one 100-metre section; it may also allow encounters with wild hares, partridges and pheasants.

Remembrance

There are two war memorials in the municipality of Izel-lès-Équerchin. The first commemorates 32 local soldiers who fell in the First World War, as well as three civilians who were killed in Izel-lès-Équerchin by bombardments before the Battle of Arras in April 1917.

The Monument aux Défenseurs honours 52 soldiers of Nancy’s 269th Infantry Regiment and reinforcement units who fell in the Battle of Izel-lès-Équerchin on 2 October 1914. The municipal cemetery brings together the Calvaire, the Monument aux Défenseurs and a military cemetery to form a significant local memorial site.

The central statue of the war memorial was created by the sculptor Henri Rougerol from Douai; the monument was unveiled on 30 December 1934. The statue “Poilu mourant” at the Monument aux Défenseurs was created by the Lille sculptor Jules Dechin and cast by the Antoine Durenne foundry.

The Église Saint-Martin was consecrated on 9 April 1928, after the Allied offensive in April 1917 had destroyed almost the entire village of Izel-lès-Équerchin. The church’s two motorised bells, Françoise and Marie-Bernadette, are still in operation; the manually operated bell Odile is no longer used.

The Abbey of Saint-Vaast in Arras held the seigneurial rights over Izel-lès-Équerchin from 1098 until the French Revolution. The municipal coat of arms contains the arms of the Jesuit house of Béthune, to which part of the seigneurial jurisdiction had been transferred. In 1920, a Croix de guerre was added to the municipal coat of arms.

Traces of Gallic metallurgy have been found in the area around Izel-lès-Équerchin.

Associations

Les Randonneurs Izellois organise two weekly hikes. On Thursdays, they offer weekly sporting activities such as hiking, mountain biking and cycling in Izel-lès-Équerchin and the surrounding area. Les Randonneurs Izellois also organise a weekly cycling tour.

The annual programme includes the Randonnée de l’Escrebieux, a cycling, mountain biking and hiking event; the 34th edition took place on a Sunday, 17 May. The Comité des fêtes et d'entraide organises cultural events and exhibitions in Izel-lès-Équerchin.
