Culture and History

The Tour du Guet is a small belfry built of brick and stone in the early 17th century. It contains a clock, a bell and a dungeon, and formerly also served as a courtroom. The building stands on the Grand Rue, which is considered to be the Roman road from Bavay to Reims.

The Musée de la Maison de Pays reconstructs typical interiors and clothing from the late 19th century. It features an estaminet with a depiction of Robert Louis Stevenson, a seamstress's workshop, and a dairy with mannequins dressed in period clothing and historical objects. Individual visitors and groups are welcomed by prior appointment; the museum is also open every second Sunday of the month from 2:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The Église de Quartes is mentioned in a document of the chapter of Saint-Géry de Cambrai from 1125 and contains numerous 17th-century gravestones. An annual pilgrimage to Notre Dame de Quartes takes place every Whit Monday; Notre Dame de Quartes is invoked in cases of fever and illness.

The painter Felix Del Marle was born in Pont-sur-Sambre on October 21, 1889. The Maison natale du peintre Félix del Marle dates from the mid-19th century and became the manor house of a brewery built around 1888. It is the birthplace of Félix Del Marle; there, around 1926, he created a Neoplasticist decoration, which he modified around 1945. On a journey from Antwerp to Pontoise, Robert Louis Stevenson and his companion travelled, among other waterways, along the Sambre and passed through Pont-sur-Sambre.

Nature and Landscape

The RNR de Pantegnies is located east of the municipality of Pont-sur-Sambre, in a loop of the Sambre and in a bocage landscape with wet woodland, protected plant species and diverse wildlife.

The RNR de Pantegnies has two nature trails: the 3.1 km loop “boucle de la Sambre” and the 1.7 km loop “boucle de l’hirondelle”. At an observation point, visitors can watch ducks and herons and cross the marshland via a wooden footbridge.

The Parc des Libellules is a four-hectare green space for walks, with well-maintained walking paths and picnic areas.

Water and Trails

Pont-sur-Sambre is a nautical stop on the Escales Sambre network, which offers hiking and cycling routes along the towpaths beside the Sambre.

Sambre Évasion offers nature trips from Pont-sur-Sambre in license-free electric boats. Boat trips between Pont-sur-Sambre and Berlaimont are also available.
