Culture
In the Ousten district of Ancizan stands the Chapelle Saint-Jean-Baptiste, a chapel dating from the 12th century. It has a single-nave interior, a semicircular apse, a bell tower partly clad in slate and a wrought-iron cross.
The Maison Oustalet is a Renaissance house and bears witness to the area’s important textile history. Its features include tall attic rooms beneath a mansard roof, stepped gables and a large dormer with rich sculptural decoration.
The residential building of the Ferme Paoulat has largely preserved its room layout from the 16th and 17th centuries. The complex also includes an external round staircase tower and a habitable rectangular tower with three floors.
The Musée de la Vallée d’Aure is an ecomuseum on the Route de Saint-Lary in Ancizan. It presents the valley’s past in 16 reconstructed everyday scenes featuring historical objects, contemporary photographs, traditional costumes, eyewitness accounts and traditional music. In its gallery, the museum presents temporary exhibitions throughout the year.
The Maison Castet at 3 Rue de Loumet in Ancizan dates from 1568 and is recognisable by its distinctive staircase tower.
Food and Drink
The Cidrerie d’Ancizan operates a restaurant serving cuisine from the French south-west and regional specialities such as tapas, grilled dishes and garbure. It sells cider all year round and houses a museographic area. The ANCIZAN – Route d’Arreau bus stop is less than a 10-minute walk from the Cidrerie d’Ancizan and is served by the LANNEMEZAN–SAINT-LARY-SOULAN line.
Nature
Lac de Montarrouye is a French Pyrenean lake in the municipalities of Ancizan and Campan. Ancizan also forms part of the 4 Véziaux grazing area, where shepherds drive cattle, horses and sheep to higher elevations in summer.
Hiking and Winter
The Boucle d’Ousten is a 4.09 km walking route that starts and ends in Ancizan. It leads from Ancizan to the small hamlet of Ousten and then downhill towards Guchen.
Ancizan is a stage on the GR 105, which is connected with the Chemins de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle. The route over the Hourquette d’Ancizan leads from Saint-Lary-Soulan to Ancizan; the ascent begins at an elevation of 812 m, and from the summit the descent leads towards Lac de Payolle.
When the road over the Hourquette is closed to cars, it becomes an area for ski touring and cross-country skiing in winter. A hike to Lac de Montarrouye is possible from Payolle.
The path to Lac d’Arou leads from the Hourquette to the lake, which lies at an elevation of 1,786 m.
