History and architectural heritage

At the end of the 13th or beginning of the 14th century, Courrensan was expanded by a suburb located east of the fortification wall, referred to in 17th-century documents as “la bastide”.

The Château de Courrensan dates partly from the 13th century and was extensively rebuilt in the 15th and 16th centuries. Its surrounding wall is flanked at the corners by four hexagonal towers and a square tower that serves as a keep. The oldest part consists of a large square tower and a small central tower with a spiral staircase; both date from the 13th century.

The Église Sainte-Madeleine in Courrensan already held parish church status around 1673; Saint-Martial was its affiliated church at that time. Extensive renovation work was carried out on the Église Sainte-Madeleine from 1884 to 1888. It is also documented by the foundation in 1555 of a chapel dedicated to Mary Magdalene.

Geographical setting

Courrensan is located at the tip of a rocky promontory and overlooks the Lauzoue stream to the west and south, as well as a right-bank tributary to the north.

A main road running from east to west leads in Courrensan from the church to the château and continues along the same axis through the faubourg.
