Madière lies in a landscape of elongated hills oriented towards the southeast. Small streams have cut into these ridges, forming narrow valleys. The slopes are predominantly covered by cultivated fields; the slopes of the highest hills in the east of the municipality feature wooded margins.

Culture and Buildings

The family tomb chapel of the Cancel family in Madière bears the year 1888. The Neo-Greek-style building is made of beige limestone, has a terrace roof and monumental, free-standing gables on both façades. The architectural design based on the Neo-Greek model is combined with exuberant botanical sculptural decoration, which may possibly be attributed to Art Nouveau.

The Saint-André parish church in Madière is notable for the use of rammed earth in its main masonry. The church also contains a portable, floor-standing harmonium with components made of oak, bronze, ivory and porcelain. The Neoclassical stucco decorations in the choir very probably date from the fourth quarter of the 18th century and could indicate that the church was built during this period.

Madière’s town hall and former primary school building has a steep roof covered with slate tiles, in the style of a mountain house, which is rarely found in the Ariège plain.
