Cheniménil takes you from the stained-glass windows of the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste and the archaeological site of the Temple de Mercure to signposted paths in the communal forest and a challenging mountain biking route. Those choosing Cheniménil as a destination may wish to rent a holiday apartment.

Culture and History

The stained-glass ensembles of the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Cheniménil were created between 1948 and 1958. Gabriel Loire and Jacques Loire are also named as contributors to the stained-glass windows. The choir windows are dedicated to the life of John the Baptist.

The Papeterie de l’Isle is also part of the history of the village: it was first mentioned in 1557 and was located about 200 metres downstream from the dam at the place called “à l’Isle”.

The archaeological site of the Temple de Mercure in Cheniménil contains a sanctuary dedicated to the god Mercury. Remains of three buildings were uncovered at the sanctuary. The Temple de Mercure is an archaeological site that can be visited individually, free of charge, and exclusively outdoors.

Nature

The communal forest of Cheniménil is crossed by almost 9 kilometres of hiking trails marked by the Club Vosgien. These include the long-distance GRP Tour de la Vologne trail, which crosses or runs along approximately ten parcels in the Bois Banis canton.

Cycling

The VTT n°9 – La Festi’Vall mountain bike route is a difficult 26.4-kilometre route. It starts and ends in Cheniménil and combines forest sections with more open stretches.

From Cheniménil, the route follows the road to the cemetery and then continues straight ahead along the second path on the left to the picnic area by the forestry lodge. From there, the path running south on the left leads to the remains of the Temple de Mercure, approximately 400 metres away.
