Culture and History
The Carreau Cuvelette is a mining facility in Freyming-Merlebach. Its reinforced-concrete headframe was built from 1930 to 1932 for the Compagnie des Mines de Lens. The southern headframe has been partially protected as a historic monument since 22 October 1992.
The Reumaux shaft is also one of the town’s historic sites. It was the scene of an accident involving a hoisting cage, in which 58 miners died and around 20 others were injured. On 26 March 1925, the hoisting cage of the Reumaux shaft detached and plunged 170 metres.
North of Merlebach stands the Wisselstein, an 8-metre-high and 4.5-metre-wide sandstone menhir. It is probably associated with the name Criemhilde-Spill in a document issued by Emperor Charles IV in 1354. A new church under the former patronage of the Nativity of Mary was built between 1924 and 1926.
Nature and Open Spaces
The Carrière du Barrois is a former industrial site where nature has reclaimed the area. There are designated paths for walking. A pedestrian entrance to the Carrière du Barrois is located near the Roseraie and the Reumaux housing estate.
The Parc Municipal is located on a former mining site. It features two ponds, varied planting with 30 tree species, and play areas for children.
