The Château-Bréhain marsh is a protected natural area. Its management objectives include preserving typical habitats of the alkaline marsh in good condition, as well as conserving and restoring the populations of the target species. Bréhain also has an easily accessible pond.

Geographical Location

Bréhain is located near the source of the Nied Française. The village is drained by the Ruisseau de St-Vendelin. Bréhain is also drained by the Nied.

History

At the northern exit of the village, on a rural road, lies the small necropolis of Bréhain. It contains a monument and a mass grave with 56 bodies. The necropolis bears witness to the burial on site of French soldiers who were killed on 20 August 1914.

The former Benedictine church in Bréhain was built in the 11th century by Saint-Arnould Abbey for the pilgrimage to Saint Gengoulf. The present church in Bréhain was built in 1772. In the historical surroundings of Bréhain, Marthille and Château-Bréhain are connected to the salt roads leading from Marsal; both places are considered stations along these salt roads.
