Salses-Le-Château: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Culture

At the Forteresse de Salses, visitors can independently explore the lower areas of the parade ground and the courtyard of the réduit. Guided tours are led by the monument's staff; registration takes place at reception upon arrival, and advance reservations are not possible. Family tours and workshops are also offered during the school holidays.

The portal and bell tower of the Church of Saint-Étienne in Salses-le-Château date from the 17th century, while the rest of the building was renovated in the 19th and 20th centuries. On Avenue Général de Gaulle, a huge mural depicts the Étang, the fortress and the vineyards of Salses-le-Château. The Porte des Pays Catalans is considered a symbol of Catalan identity and is the first or last landmark for travellers entering or leaving Catalonia, respectively.

Garrieux is a hamlet belonging to Salses-le-Château, located near the Étang. A fully preserved Romanesque chapel stands there among pine trees; a mass is celebrated in the Chapel of Garrieux every year at Pentecost.

Landscape

The imposing 16th-century Forteresse de Salses lies between the Étangs de Salses and the Corbières. The Étang de Salses forms an interesting aquatic ecosystem that has largely been preserved from human intervention.

The market in Salses takes place every Wednesday morning from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Place de la République. Products on offer include meat and sausage products, fish, vegetables, clothing and haberdashery.
