History

A striking detail of the townscape is the statue of Marianne on the forecourt of Maureilhan Town Hall. It was erected in 1882 and wears a laurel wreath instead of the traditional Phrygian cap. In her left hand, she holds the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. The statue is considered the first depiction of Marianne in Languedoc and one of the earliest in all of France.

The town's architectural history includes the present-day Église Saint-Baudile, which was built in 1838 and is the third church in the town. It is surrounded closely by houses, meaning that only a few exterior views are visible.

In the town centre stands the Château de Maureilhan, with towers that are still well preserved. Its large, square fortification was built between the 15th and 17th centuries. Inside is a hall with wall paintings, including a deer-hunting scene. The Château de Maureilhan is privately owned, is listed as a historic monument and cannot be visited.

Cycling

Between Cazouls-lès-Béziers and Maureilhan, the Voie verte de St-Chinian - Colombiers includes a 5 km-long, fully protected section. It follows a former railway line.
