Le Vigan: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Culture

The historic centre of Le Vigan features a dense network of narrow, checkerboard-style streets. Above the old town, the Château de Mareilles stands on the summit of a rocky promontory; the building is surrounded by terraces and gardens laid out on crosswise levels.

The Vieux Pont is a Romanesque bridge dating from the 12th century and was classified as a Monument Historique in 1928 and 1941. The Vieux Pont and Buscailhou site is freely accessible every day throughout the year; a path runs along the right bank of the Arre there.

The Château d'Assas is a former house of the Faventines family, built in the Barris district of Le Vigan between a courtyard and a garden. Today, it houses the intermunicipal media library of the Pays Viganais.

The Musée Cévenol preserves and showcases the heritage of the southern Causses and southern Cévennes. Its permanent exhibitions are devoted to ethnology and traditions, textiles, as well as art and literature.

Nature and trails

The Circuit de l'Arre runs along the riverbank and is connected with the silk industry of the Pays Viganais up to the beginning of the 21st century. The route is a signposted circular trail starting in Le Vigan, has a stony surface and is not suitable for pushchairs.

From Le Vigan, the Pays Viganais offers 350 km of trails that can be used on foot, on horseback and by bicycle. The Ceven'Trail area offers more than 20 permanently established and marked running routes. In addition, the 240 km-long, signposted long-distance hiking trail Chemin de Saint Guilhem starts at Place du marché in Le Vigan.

Activities

The Gard section of the Grande Traversée du Massif Central à VTT passes through Le Vigan and offers 90 km of paths and narrow singletrack trails.

The mountain bike trail “VTT Vallée de l’Arre – Circuit N°1 Vert” starts in Le Vigan, initially follows the riverbank, passes through Avèze and along the Promenade du Viaduc towards Arre and Bez-et-Esparon, then continues along a track and a path through Lasfons and returns via the voie verte.

The mountain bike trail “VTT Vallée de l’Arre – Circuit N°2 Bleu” also starts in Le Vigan. It follows the riverbank, passes through Avèze and along the Promenade du Viaduc towards Arre, then continues through the village and along a former railway line.

The Circuit des Mégalithes is a route for exploring the megalithic heritage of the Causse de Blandas, which can be travelled by bicycle or car.

Cuisine

Restaurants in Le Vigan serve trout from the surrounding rivers. They also offer a selection of dishes featuring sweet onions from the Cévennes, Pélardon, Reinette apples from Le Vigan and chestnuts.
