Culture
The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin in La Rothière includes a nave dating from the 12th century. The choir and sanctuary were rebuilt in the 13th-century style after their destruction during the French campaign under Louis XVIII.
The Napoleonic memorial monument in La Rothière commemorates the fact that the village gave its name to a battle. The Battle of La Rothière took place on 1 February 1814 and is considered one of the largest battles of the French campaign.
The washhouse in La Rothière was restored in 1990 by young people from the village. A plaque in the washhouse commemorates the death of General Margue, as well as civilians and military personnel who lost their lives on 1 February 1814.
History
Known as the “Voie de l’Océan”, the Roman road connects Langres with Boulogne-sur-Mer. The Roman road sections were registered by decree of 5 August 1982; sections of the Roman road also run through La Rothière.
Landscape
Along the old Roman road, the lime tree avenues planted under Sully shelter a calvary. The site with the calvary was recently restored as part of a landscaping project and is a very popular leisure and recreational area among the village’s residents and tourists.
