Voutenay-sur-Cure combines the Église Saint-André with the landscape of the Côte de l'étang. The Église Saint-André is dated to the 12th and 13th centuries based on a series of stone corbels along the edge of the roof. Its roof consists of stone slabs laid without a roof frame or rafters.
Culture
The historic village landscape includes the ensemble of the bridge and washhouse, which has been protected as a listed historic monument since 1960. The square washhouse stands on a circular platform that divides the water of the washhouse and the river into two branches. The clock tower was built in 1829 to house an additional bell, after the church bell was deemed too weak because of its distance from the population. The original clock had a wooden face, a bronze mechanism and only an hour hand. The Église Saint-André also contains a bas-relief entitled “Saint André et saint Jean-Baptiste”.
Nature
The Côte de l'étang in the municipality of Voutenay-sur-Cure is the first site in the Yonne département to be designated as an ENS. The 25-hectare sensitive natural area includes dry limestone grasslands as well as adjoining scrubland, boxwood stands and thermophilic forests. The south-facing slope overlooks the Cure valley; from its summit, there are views of Voutenay-sur-Cure and its characteristic architecture. Because of its low vegetation and strong sunlight, the Côte de l'étang is considered a place with a Mediterranean atmosphere and the character of a “petit Causse”.
Activities
The GR® 13 long-distance hiking trail passes through Voutenay-sur-Cure and connects the Gâtinais with the Morvan. From Voutenay-sur-Cure, canoeing and kayaking trips can also be taken along a route of approximately 10 kilometres to Arcy-sur-Cure. The descent takes around three hours and requires participants to be able to swim.
