Charencey lies in a valley crossed by the Drenne. Those who choose Charencey as a destination may wish to rent a holiday apartment.

The ZNIEFF area “Val de la Drenne et coteaux entre Charencey et Drée” includes Charencey and covers 3,488.35 hectares.

This area includes a small bocage valley as well as a predominantly wooded plateau and its slopes on hard Middle Jurassic limestone.

The grasslands of Charencey-Bas are home to four butterfly species of significance for the ZNIEFF inventory, including two of European interest.

Culture and History

The church in Charencey houses a polychrome-painted and gilded wooden statuette depicting Saint Abdon. The statuette features a turban and a palm; the lion at his feet is considered an indication of his martyrdom. It was listed as a protected object under heritage protection on 20 November 1972.

Above the village stands the Church of Saint Didier, accessible via a staircase with wide steps. The parish church was built in the 19th century. Inside, there are ornamented capitals and several statues.

Old houses dating from the 16th century have been preserved in Charencey-Bas.

The 34-kilometre Roman road from Sombernon to Alésia connects Sombernon with Alise-Sainte-Reine.
