History

The Château de Vollore has been owned by the same family for more than two centuries and is the current residence of General La Fayette’s descendants. Of the Château de Vollore, built in the 12th century, only the imposing Romanesque keep of the former fortress remains today. At the Château de Vollore, visitors can tour the park and exhibition room; a puzzle tour around the château and an escape game are also offered there.

The Place de l’église lies at the centre of one of the department’s first fortified settlements and is now Vollore-Ville’s central square. Le Pedde is a covered passageway suspended above the rue des Cros du four, connecting a historic house with its garden without touching the street. The Maison de la Tourelle is a Renaissance residence; its façades were partially listed as Monuments historiques in 1926.

Religious Buildings

The Notre-Dame de la Confrérie sanctuary, also known as Notre-Dame des Neiges, became a much-visited pilgrimage site. The chapel of Notre-Dame des Neiges was restored in the 19th century.

The Église Saint-Maurice preserves the first three Romanesque bays of the former building. The Église Saint-Maurice also houses a polychrome statue of the Virgin Mary dating from the 12th century.
