Culture and History

The church of Saint-Genis-du-Bois was built mainly in the 12th century. It has been listed as a historic monument of France since 21 December 1925.

The parish cemetery is still located next to the church; graves from the 17th and 18th centuries were uncovered there. The foundations of an early Christian building were identified during rescue excavations north of the sanctuary. Sarcophagus troughs from the early Middle Ages were also identified north of the sanctuary. At the archaeological site of the church, a terracotta masonry element characteristic of hypocausts in Gallo-Roman baths was also observed.

The watermill on the Engranne dates from the 15th, 17th and 19th centuries. It is located on the Engranne on the border between Martres and Saint-Genis-du-Bois. The Tertre de la Commanderie hospitalière is a named heritage site in Saint-Genis-du-Bois.

The area around Saint-Genis-du-Bois is home to Château Benauge and the Château ducal de Cadillac-sur-Garonne, both castles, as well as the Abbaye de La Sauve-Majeure, a historic site. Château de Malle is a park in the wider regional surroundings of Saint-Genis-du-Bois; Château Ferrand is a castle there.

Nature and Activities

Saint-Genis-du-Bois is one of the 19 municipalities in the Natura 2000 site Réseau hydrographique de l’Engranne, which covers 635 hectares. The municipality is also part of the type II ZNIEFF site Vallée de l’Engranne. This area encompasses diverse habitats and a species-rich animal life, including species of particular conservation interest.

In the Natura 2000 site of the Engranne network, which includes Saint-Genis-du-Bois, recreational activities include fishing, hiking and cycling. The village washhouse is located on the Engranne, a tributary of the Dordogne that flows through Saint-Genis-du-Bois. In Saint-Genis-du-Bois, there is a tour through the village as well as opportunities for hiking and mountain biking.
