Discover Parkano: Lakes, Forest History and Nature Trails
Accommodation in Parkano
Parkano combines a landscape shaped by lakes with stories of forestry and a variety of nature trails. Families can choose from short circular routes, longer trails and cultural discoveries. This mix makes Parkano an interesting destination for a trip where every day can be different.
Forest History and Local Traditions
The Parkano Local History Museum presents Parkano’s local traditions. Its collection includes numerous old objects from Parkano Church. The Metsämuseo offers another glimpse into the history of working in the forest, showing developments from the rise of the sawmill industry in the 1860s to mechanisation in the 1960s. The site includes an exhibition hall, forest workers’ accommodation, a sauna, a horse stable and forestry machinery.
The historic granary beside Parkano Church is another notable place. Built in 1890, the building houses the Gustaf Wrede af Elimä section, with examples of traditional homes and a selection of tools. At Messukallio, history and landscape meet: this granite lookout point on the shore of Kaidatvedet has also served as a church.
Those interested in the history of technology can find tube radios from the 1920s to the 1960s, as well as telephones, televisions and other antique electronics, at Parkanon Radiomuseo. Galleria Raamikko displays paintings and installations by Salme Törmä. From June to August, a changing ITE exhibition is held in Parkano each year, and visitors can explore it along a mobile ITE route.
Lakes, Rivers and Nature Trails
Kaidatvedet is a chain of small lakes in a tectonic rift valley running from north to south. Parkano’s town centre and Lake Parkanojärvi are also located in this valley. Visitor information highlights Kaidatvedet as a place to enjoy tranquillity and natural beauty. On the shore of Kaitojenvet lies Sormikivi, Parkano’s largest glacial erratic. The boulder is made of local pink granite and is located along the Käpykintukka nature trail.
A shorter nature trail option is the path in the Kallio district. At about 900 m long, it follows the Pappilankoski from Pärteeninkuja to Kuruntie, passing rapids and quieter stretches of water. The approximately 5 km Lähiliikuntareitti also runs through the centre. At Leijonapuisto, a path about 800 m long passes through the riverside area and around Lehtikoski.
Alkkianvuori has two nature trails of different lengths: Ellinpolku is 2.8 km long, and Lakilenkki is 4.3 km. Visitor information highlights Alkkianvuori for its impressive scenery and traces of ancient shorelines. From the Metsämuseo, an approximately 2 km circular trail for very young children also begins; it features Kustaa activity signs. The grounds of the Metsämuseo can also be used for hiking and experiencing nature outside opening hours. The surrounding area has a nature trail, Messukallio, a beach, shelters and campfire sites.
Excursions and Choosing the Right Holiday Rental
For longer distances, Paroonin taival connects Parkano railway station, via the town centre, to Seitsemis; it is part of Pirkan taival. Parkano railway station is a gateway to the Geopark for many visitors. Waterways offer a different perspective: a canoe route runs from Pyhäniemi in Kihniö through Parkano to Lake Kyrösjärvi in Ikaalinen. Another route goes from Lapinneva in Parkano via the Kovesjoki to Kovelahti on Lake Kyrösjärvi. The Viinikanjoki near the centre is a well-known fishing area and recreation spot. Parkano is also part of the Järvien-Reitti, which starts in Tampere, via the Aure-Reitti.
When choosing your holiday rental, consider which experiences you want to shape your trip: forest history and museums, nature trails, waterscapes, or a longer hiking or canoeing route. Kaidatvedet is also part of the Kyrönkankaan winter road, an old route connecting southern Finland with Ostrobothnia. Those looking to combine art, tradition and nature will find several different sources of inspiration in Parkano, without having to limit their stay to a single activity.
