Joutsa offers different sides of Finland to discover: an international art centre, a traditional farmhouse, natural areas and opportunities on the water. When choosing your holiday rental, you can consider whether you want to focus mainly on culture, birdwatching and trails through wetlands, or activities on the water.

Art and Culture in Joutsa

Haihatus Art Center and Residency is an international art centre in Joutsa. In summer, it offers art exhibitions, music concerts, workshops and performances. Its cultural programme therefore ranges from exhibitions to events featuring music and the performing arts. A distinctive venue within the art centre is KITA: it is Finland’s only gallery dedicated to kinetic art. Visitors who want to experience different art forms during their trip will find a clearly defined focus here alongside the general exhibition programme.

Joutsan Talomuseo offers an impression of traditional life in Joutsa. Its main building is the former Mesiäinen house from the village of Marjotaipale and is a typical Finnish farmhouse. The oldest part of the building is over 200 years old. For families interested in rural traditions, the house offers a tangible point of reference: its architecture and age can be explored through a specific building rather than as abstract topics alone. Joutsan Joutopäivät adds another cultural perspective as a village festival in July that celebrates rural traditions and has been organised since the 1970s.

Wetlands and Birdwatching

Myllykoski Nature Reserve is right next to the town centre. Boardwalks lead through wetlands, and bridges span several waterways. A birdwatching tower stands near the rapids; Myllykoski is considered a good place for birdwatching. The rapids and Myllynlahti Bay remain ice-free year-round. If you want to include nature experiences in your trip, you can give this place particular consideration when planning, as the reserve is right by the centre of Joutsa.

Another natural feature is the biodiversity area in Haapasuo near Joutsa. It covers 111 hectares and is located on a former peat extraction site. Its past use is explicitly part of the site’s history. If you are interested in nature and how landscapes change, you can plan Haapasuo as a separate destination alongside the wetlands of Myllykoski.

Exploring on Foot, by Bike and on the Water

The Valklammi boardwalk trail is 4 km long and includes about 1.5 km of boardwalks. Nearby Leivonmäki National Park offers opportunities for hiking, camping, mountain biking and trail running. There are several different ways to enjoy active experiences in nature.

Joutsa also offers several opportunities on the water: the waterways stretching from Lake Puula to Lake Päijänne are suitable for kayaking, canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding. The Meloen paddling route has five different landing sites. Each landing site has a shelter and a campfire site or lean-to shelter. These offer different ways to shape your stay when choosing between land- and water-based activities.

If you prefer travelling on gravel roads, you could consider the Hitonhauta Gravel Loop, which follows Joutsa’s gravel roads. In summer, there is also a letterbox cycling event that lets visitors explore the villages of Joutsa. You can ride either the entire route or part of it.

Local Experiences and Getting There

Café Meijerinliiteri is a summer café in the courtyard of a former dairy and serves homemade pastries. It combines a seasonal café visit with a place whose former use is part of its story. A bus service takes backpackers and holidaymakers directly to the centre of Joutsa, for example from Helsinki, Lahti and Jyväskylä.

If you would like to discover places beyond Joutsa, here are some additional destinations: Kinnula, Jämsä, Lievestuore, Rutalahti, Saarijärvi, Uurainen, Pylkönmäki and Haapamäki.
